The 2nd offering from St. Van Cortlandt & the 101 sees singer/songwriter Daniel Van Cortlandt stepping away from the role of solo artist toward a leadership role in a 5-piece rock band. It features the writing, performance, and production contributions of lead guitarist and backup vocalist Troy Fannin, at well as guest appearances by Chris Crawford of French Miami, Nils Sorensen of Brothers Moving, and Natalie Mishell of Natalie Mishell & Company. After receiving a humbling hospital visit from his father while recovering from a broken jaw, Daniel Van Cortlandt was inspired to write about the bonds of blood and family. With the key of Ab minor acting as a kind of shared musical DNA, each of the 4 songs on The Lion Tree were developed as individual portraits of a 4 member family. The lyrics delve into dark subjects such as childhood disillusionment, divorce, estrangement, and the blame and guilt that often accompany these events. However, what sets The Lion Tree apart from other records that address those themes are its reflective moments of admiration, gratitude, responsibility, security, and love.
