about

The 2nd offering from St. Van Cortlandt & the 101 sees singer/songwriter Daniel Van Cortlandt stepping away from the role of solo artist toward a leadership role in a 5-piece rock band. It features the writing, performance, and production contributions of lead guitarist and backup vocalist Troy Fannin, at well as guest appearances by Chris Crawford of French Miami, Nils Sorensen of Brothers Moving, and Natalie Mishell of Natalie Mishell & Company. After receiving a humbling hospital visit from his father while recovering from a broken jaw, Daniel Van Cortlandt was inspired to write about the bonds of blood and family. With the key of Ab minor acting as a kind of shared musical DNA, each of the 4 songs on The Lion Tree were developed as individual portraits of a 4 member family. The lyrics delve into dark subjects such as childhood disillusionment, divorce, estrangement, and the blame and guilt that often accompany these events. However, what sets The Lion Tree apart from other records that address those themes are its reflective moments of admiration, gratitude, responsibility, security, and love.

about

St. Van Cortlandt & the 101 Brooklyn, New York

St. Van Cortlandt & the 101 was created by singer/songwriter Daniel Van Cortlandt as a vehicle to explore home-made instruments, atypical song structures, and unique lyrical ideas.

As the band's lineup gradually came together, the sound of St. Van Cortlandt & the 101 developed beyond concise songs draped in experimental sound design into more colorful, grandiose, improvisatory rock'n'roll.

Track Name: Like the Arrow Miss the Stone
He never laughed in quite the right way
He never jumped into the fray
He never danced and he never got laid
But he was like a god to me
And when I think back to those first days
He was always there, he never left me
I start to wonder if I'm the one to blame
For all his never having done much of anything

Oh won’t you help me, I’m drunk I can’t sleep
I’m out here on my own I just want to come home

What ugly things those insect wings
And I don't care for interpreting
Because after all it’s just another stupid dream
And I know it doesn't mean, doesn’t mean a thing
Doesn’t mean a thing, doesn’t mean a thing

Half a mile east of anywhere and the rains began to calm
I left my brother standing there with a sliver in his palm
Where once I’d swung from his great big arms, we were now both free to roam
But still I find myself missing him like the arrow miss the stone

I snuck into your room and I put your records on
I read your comic books so glad that you were gone
And I hope you understood that it was just my age
I wanted to be you but with a different name

What ugly things those insect wings
And I don't care for interpreting
Because after all it’s just another stupid dream
And I know it doesn't mean, doesn’t mean a thing
And I know it doesn't mean, doesn’t mean a thing
Doesn’t mean a thing, doesn’t mean a thing
Track Name: The Nurse & the Wine Maker
Left behind the hospital
Told himself blood and wine
Weren’t so different, so different at all

Held so tight, wiped the tears from my eyes
And told me our paths through life
Come together time after time

He came in from the east in a two-door-beat-in Ford
Got a position techin’ blood in an open-hearted ward
And there he met his gal, said she was all he’d ever need
He put away those childish things and he took down to a knee
Well in a year they’d had a son and in 7 had one more
He did everything he could, but he was restless at his core
One night he drank ‘til he was drunk out in the vineyard in the rain
He took a tumble in the mud, cursed his wife and walked away
But he didn’t turn his back, not the way that some men would
‘Cuz he was restless at his core, but he did everything he could
Track Name: Alice
It’s been a long time out on our own
Thinking that somehow we might, we might have got it wrong
I kept telling myself I would find my own way,
You were only there just to try and hold me back
Boy what a brat.

Do you remember piggy backs back home?
Tricky at the Mayan and breaking all your bones?
I’m sorry for every time I didn’t try in school.
I’m sorry for every time I ever lied to you.
Oh Alice, I promise I’ve stopped.
Oh Alice, I promise I’ve stopped.

It’s just a variation on a common thread
A dedication to love we can’t forget
Passed back through the start
Slipped into my broken heart
And will it carry us unto our dying bed
This secretariat that’s hanging overhead
Pulling up the boulevard
Right back at the start

And if we don’t make our mother proud
Whose gonna buy our second round?
I’ll do what I can
And by the way: I want to thank you all
For everything that I have and that I am.
Track Name: Escape Artist
Life support’s all shot to shit
And heaven knows how it came to this
Daddy’s there beside the bed
Strokes his beard and shakes his head
He’s smiling but his eyes are wet
And I don’t like to ring the nurse
Maybe it’s just a case of nerves
Lord, I know she’s trying to help
But what she’s got I can’t accept
So in the end she blames herself

And I don’t wanna be alone no more / A junky on the jones no more
You gotta understand, I’m sorry and I’m sad / So darlin’ hold my hand
I think I’d like to stay in bed number four / Here on the emergency ward
A screw through the jaw and a rib through the heart / And that’s how it starts

We dance around before the fight
Ball up our fists and let ‘em fly
Nervous endings sever here
Whole hosts of angels disappear
So shower down the chandeliers

And I don’t wanna be alone no more / A junky on the jones no more
You gotta understand, I’m sorry and I’m sad / So darlin’ hold my hand
I think I’d like to stay in bed number four / Here on the emergency ward
A screw through the jaw and a rib through the heart / And that’s how it starts

My head was up in the clouds
My family is so damn proud
I’m slamming a double down at Mars Bar
I said we should shut it down
Get a cab and head up town
I might have known we’d take all too far, we’d take it all to far, yeah

These are the veins that break in our hearts
When all of us take an unwitting part in our own demise
Passed back through the start
